The Lake Lanier Association has reported a record-breaking effort for trash collection during its annual Shore Sweep.
LLA officials said 1,200 volunteers collected 85.08 tons of trash in and around Lake Lanier for Shore Sweep 2021. That total amounts to 170,160 pounds of trash. The previous record was set in 2019 and 2020 when volunteers collected 80 tons of trash.
Volunteers were able to begin trash collection efforts on Sept. 11, but all trash was turned in on Saturday, Sept. 25.
In years past, volunteers have collected everything from lawn furniture to appliances and all sorts of household trash during the annual effort to clear Lanier of trash and debris.
