Mental Health Day for Hall County school students, teachers gets formal okay from school board

By B.J. Williams

This weekend, Hall County students and staff will get a three day weekend. Monday, Sept. 20 has been declared a "mental health day" for the district.

The change in the calendar had already been posted on the Hall County School District website, but the county school board gave formal approval to the change at its meeting this evening.

Students will not be given an additional work to complete for Monday.

The school district has also said the day can be used as a "voluntary vaccination day" and district officials have coordinated four different locations where school employees and eligible students can get COVID-19 shots.

"There's also going to be vaccinations available at these locations for other individuals," said Kevin Bales, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.

Bales also noted it will be a good time for those who need a booster vaccine to take care of that.

"I think Sept. 20 is the first day for some folks if they're eligible to get boosters if they're immunocompromised," Bales said.

The four locations where Hall County students and employees can get vaccines are Wauka Mountain Pharmacy on Cleveland Highway, Ingles Pharmacy on Winder Highway, Citizens Pharmacy on Atlanta Highway and Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center, where District 2 Public Health will set up a vaccine clinic for the day. Bales said specific hours would be posted to the district website.

The day off on Sept. 20 also changes the calendar for high school students in the district, who had been scheduled to have Sept. 29 as a learn-from-home day. High schoolers who have face-to-face learning will now be in school on Sept. 29.
