2. Four men indicted for pointing lasers at police helicopters

On July 13, four Atlanta men  received  indictments after being accused of aiming a laser pointer at police helicopters in four separate incidents between 2020 and 2021.

Daniel Maloney, 55, of Snellville, Fredy Contreras, 48, of Lilburn, Timothy Wilson, 61, of Atlanta and Theodore Rowe, 51, of Lawrenceville were arraigned by U.S. Magistrate Judge Justin S. Anand.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the each of the men pointed a laser pointer at a police helicopter while it was trying to assist officers on the ground. It is dangerous to do this because pointing a laser at any aircraft can interfere with the pilot's vision. Three of these laser incidents happened in Gwinnett County.

“When aimed at an aircraft, a beam of light from a handheld laser can illuminate a cockpit, disorienting and temporarily blinding the pilot or pilots of the craft, and in this case, preventing police from completing important public safety work,” said Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta Keri Farley. “It's not a game. It's a federal felony that the FBI and our law enforcement partners take very seriously.”

Gwinnett County Police Department Chief James D. McClure said: “The Gwinnett Police Department is thankful for the diligence the FAA and FBI both have for continuing the mission of educating the public on how dangerous it is to point a laser at any aircraft, our department will not allow these offenses to interfere with the Aviation Unit’s operations and the department’s mission of serving and protecting the residents of Gwinnett with first class law enforcement service, including airborne response.”  Read More

5. Georgia DNR trackingbear found in downtown Gainesville

The Gainesville Police Department and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are tracking a bear that was seen wandering through downtown Gainesville. It has been confirmed by the Georgia DNR that this is the same bear that was spotted last Sunday in Alpharetta near the Avalon.

According to Gainesville Chief of Police Jay Parrish, the bear was last seen Saturday at 2pm at E.E. Butler Parkway. The most recent report stated that the animal was headed toward Fair Street.

"This particular bear,  she's been on quite a journey," said Melissa Cummings, a spokeswoman for the DNR's department of wildlife resources. "She's been in a couple of different states. And now she appears to be headed back up towards north Georgia. And that is absolutely the goal."

Cummings explained that the DNR wants the bear to keep moving on her own and to avoid forceful relocation.

The bear is wearing a tracking collar and it has not been reported that she has hurt anyone or caused damages to any business.

Parrish advises citizens to avoid interaction with the bear. The police department also reminds citizens to not call 911 about the bear unless absolutely necessary.  Read More
