ICYMI: Weekend stories you may have missed

Here are the top stories you might have missed this weekend. 

1. 22-year-old man killed in crash near Clarkesville

Georgia State Patrol reported that a 22-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision in Habersham on Saturday afternoon. 

Christopher Coffman was a passenger in the vehicle that was northbound on Habersham Mills Road Connector near Clarkesville when the driver failed to yield at Ga. 17.

The 2006 Jeep Renegade was hit head-on by a Ford F150 pickup.

All three people involved in the accident were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical center, Coffman died soon after. The driver of the Jeep, Alexis White,24, suffered leg and abdomen injuries.  Read More

 

2. Lawrenceville Police investigating hit-and-run with bicyclist

The Lawrenceville Police Department has asked for the public's help identifying a suspect after a bicyclist was severely injured in a July hit-and-run.

According to a press release on the police department's Facebook page, officers responded at about 3:30 am  on July 28 to the incident on Scenic Highway near Jackson Street. 

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the unconscious bicyclist with severe injuries.  They were transported to  Northside Gwinnett Hospital, but the car that struck the victim left at the scene. 

According to witnesses, a dark-colored vehicle was seen driving away toward East Crogan Street. Investigators believe it may have been a charcoal gray  Jeep with possible damage to the front end, the hood, and possibly the windshield.

3. Two people arrested for incidents on Habersham County campuses prior to start of classes

Two individuals were arrested for incidents in Habersham County on Friday just before the new school year started. The arrests were made for incidents on different campuses. One individual was armed while the other was a school employee. 

 On Thursday, two school resource officers responded to the Habersham County Schools Technology Center parking lot, where two adults going through a divorce were in a domestic argument, said Habersham County Chief Deputy Murray Kogod.

After engaging in the verbal argument, the male got into his truck, brandished a handgun, and proceeded to make comments about harming himself. The man then left the technology center and went home where he was arrested without incident, 

That man, 27-year-old Martin Paramo-Guzman of Cornelia, is now charged with carrying a weapon on school property and disorderly conduct. 

The second arrest involved a Habersham County school system employee who allegedly punched her ex-husband and his wife during a school open house on Wednesday.  The incident took place at Clarkesville Elementary School. 

 The woman, Kensie Kimbrell Sosebee of Clarkesville, is charged with one count of battery under the Family Violence Act and one count of battery.  Read More
 

4. Georgia school bus driver killed in wreck with utility truck

A Georgia school bus driver died when a school bus and utility truck collided Friday morning south of Atlanta. Two students also suffered minor injuries.

The Georgia State Patrol identified the driver as 69-year-old Sebastian Ciarcia of Yatesville. State troopers say Ciarcia crossed into the opposite lane of a two-lane road, hit the utility truck, and then lost control of the bus as it ran off the road and crashed into trees.

Three students were on the bus at the time of the accident. Two were sent to a hospital in Thompson, but the third student and the truck driver were not injured.  Read More
 

5.  One man injured, person of interest in custody in Gainesville shooting

One man was injured in a shooting Saturday afternoon at the Marathon convenience store on Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville.

The man who was shot was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in stable condition. Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook said a person of interest was in custody. The names of the victim and person of interest were not released.
