The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and Cumming Police Department have both issued alerts following reports of phone scammers impersonating authorities.
The Cuming Police Department issued a statement Friday on social media stating they recently received several phone calls from community members who said they received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The scammer reportedly asks people to make a payment over the phone for a fine, to clear a warrant, or for other alleged law enforcement-related issues.
"Please note, we will NEVER ask for money and any citations/fines/court dates are scheduled through municipal or state court," the statement reads. "If someone requests that you send money to clear up anything law enforcement related then it is likely a scam."
The agency encouraged the public to call its office phone number at (770) 781-2000 to verify any official communication from the police department.
The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office issued a similar statement Friday on social media, stating a scammer has been calling area residents stating that they are Detective Bailey. The agency said the scammer tells people they have a warrant and they need to pay over the phone with a gift card.
"We do not have a Detective Bailey and we will NEVER call you to tell you there is a warrant for your arrest and we will not ask you to pay anything," the statement reads.
