Seven Northeast Georgia educators honored at 2023 Masters in Teaching

Seven Northeast Georgia educators were recognized Wednesday morning at the 2023 Masters in Teaching ceremony at the John S. Burd Center for Performing Arts located at Brenau University’s historic Gainesville campus.

Masters in Teaching is an annual event which honors local educators in the Hall County, Gainesville City, Lakeview Academy, University of North Georgia and Brenau University schools systems. This year was the first in-person event since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Brenau Advising Coordinator and Certification Officer Gladys Harvey-Peterson.

“Brenau doesn't choose the honorees, we reach out to the districts, we reach out to the principals, we reach out to the school systems and they send us back their honorees,” Harvey-Peterson said.

The guest speaker was Georgia Teacher of the Year Michael Kobito.  Kobito is a school band director and advanced placement music theory teacher at Woodland Highschool in Cartersville who said he felt honored and proud to recognize other educators.

“Teachers deserve to be recognized for the work that they do to change our world. So to be able to be invited and involved and able to show up and celebrate, it's really exciting,” Kobito said.

This year’s award winners are as followed:
  • Dee Gillespie, University of North Georgia
