According to Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson, Gainesville recorded an unemployment rate of 2.7%, up from the 2.3% recorded a year ago.
The Gainesville workforce ended the month of May with 109,044, which was an increase of 849 compared to the previous month. In comparison to May 2022, that number rose by 1,629.
"Despite the slight increase in the unemployment rate, Georgia's economy and job market remain strong, and the number of claims remains relatively low, especially when compared to the national figures," said Thompson. "While it's important to note that one month does not establish a long-term trend, my administration will continue to closely monitor the labor market for any new developments."
According to the Georgia Department of Labor, Gainesville had 106,099 employed residents by the end of May, marking an increase of 80 over the month. In comparison to May 2022, this represents a growth of 1,127.
From April to May, Gainesville experienced a job number increase of 1,100, reaching a total of 103,800 jobs at the end of May. In comparison to May 2022, job numbers increased by 2,900.
Initial unemployment claims rose by 2% in May, and when comparing May 2022 to May 2023, the unemployment rates showed a 67% increase.
