The City of Cleveland Fire Department has been awarded a $952,380 competitive grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

City officials said the money, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will be used to purchase a new ladder truck for the department.

“The grant award for funds for the purchase of a new ladder fire truck is great news for the City of Cleveland. Our citizens can rest easy knowing that our firefighters are equipped with the equipment needed to keep our citizens safe,” Cleveland Mayor Josh Turner said. ”Additionally, the economic development impacts of this ladder truck will be tremendous as it enables existing business owners and developers for current and future projects to grow and thrive in our community.”

Cleveland Fire Department Chief Ricky Pruitt said the grant will have an immediate impact on the community.

“The City of Cleveland Fire Department wishes to thank the citizens of Cleveland, as well as the Mayor and City Council for approving the application for the grant to go toward purchasing a new ladder truck,” Pruitt said. “This funding saves the taxpayers of Cleveland almost one million dollars with the awarding of this grant. This allows tax money to be used for other projects and needs in Cleveland.”

The AFG program has equipped firefighters and other first responders with essential equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources, ensuring public safety from fire and related hazards since 2001.
