Two people face murder and drug charges behind Fannin County inmate's death

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

The GBI has arrested two people in Fannin County for the death of a Blue Ridge man within the Fannin County Detention Center last month.

A release from the GBI shows their agents have arrested Brandon Scott Hicks, 37, of Mineral Bluff and Breanna Micaela Rodriguez, 28, of North Carolina for the death of Joshua Darrin Hughes of Blue Ridge.

An autopsy on Hughes, an inmate at the Fannin Detention Center, revealed he died of a fentanyl overdose. Agents determined that Rodriguez brought fentanyl into the detention center in mid-December of 2023 and provided it to Hicks, while he and Hughes were both inmates. Hughes was found unresponsive at the Detention Center on December 12, 2023, and was brought to the Fannin Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hicks and Rodriguez are being held in Fannin County custody on felony murder, and multiple drug possession charges.
