Brenau University announced it will offer an undergraduate major in risk management and insurance in partnership with Spencer’s Course Development Committee.
In a release university officials said the Risk & Insurance Management Society awarded Brenau a $50,000 grant to aid in the development and implementation of the new degree.
Assistant Professor of Management in the College of Business and Communication Monica Heidesch, PhD., was issued the grant.
“Risk management and insurance is the study of how to protect people and organizations from financial losses caused by unexpected events,” Heidesch said. “Risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and controlling risks. Insurance is a way to transfer risk from an individual or organization to an insurance company.”
The grant is projected to help Brenau in multiple ways.
“The grant that the College of Business and Communication at Brenau University received from the Spencer Educational Foundation and RIMS will be critical in supporting Brenau's development of an RMI major within the Bachelor of Business Administration degree,” Heidesch said. ”The grant also supports students' professional development by providing resources for students to attend RISK WORLD, the annual meeting of risk professionals, and the eventual development of an insurance fraternity chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma.”
University officials said the new major will provide career opportunities for students planning on majoring in risk management and insurance.
The risk management and insurance major will be offered starting in the spring of 2024 through courses including principles of RMI, insurer operations, commercial property and liability insurance, and enterprise risk management.
