By AccessWDUN Staff

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The Lumpkin County girls used a gritty defensive performance to upset No. 5 White County, 49-46, at the Lynn Cottrell Gym on Wednesday.

The game, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed due to freezing temperatures and potentially treacherous roadways.

It was what the doctor ordered for the Lady Indians (7-11, 2-4 Region 7-3A), who grabbed a 27-22 half-time lead behind solid shooting performances from Cierra Brooks and Averie Jones. The two seniors combined for 19 points in the half.

However, White County (15-4, 3-3 Region 7-3A) regrouped at halftime. The Lady Warriors outpaced Lumpkin County, 13-4, in the third period to take the lead 35-31.

But the Lady Indians fired right back in the fourth quarter to rally back in front and hold on. Lumpkin outscored White County 18-11 in the final period.

Jones hit four straight foul shots late to help preserve the win. She finished the night with a team-high 15 points. Alayna Lindley and Regan Richardson add 11 each for the Lady Indians.

Kylie Watkins led the Lady Warriors with 15 points.

White County is now tied with Dawson County for the third spot in Region 7-3A.

The Indians continued their runaway in the third quarter, taking a 48-25 advantage.
