Girls basketball: Mill Creek hands No. 7 Buford first loss in 8-6A; LCA falls

HOSCHTON, Ga. — In a battle for first place in Region 8-6A, Mill Creek used a huge second quarter to knock off No. 7 Buford, 60-51, at home on Monday.

The loss for the Lady Wolves (8-1, 2-1 Region 8-6A) was the first of the season. Mill Creek (8-3, 4-0 Region 8-6A) ran its win streak to four straight with the win and moved 1 1/2-games ahead of Buford (8-1, 2-1 Region 8-6A) in the early going.

The Lady Hawks trailed 14-13 after the opening frame but exploded for a 23-5 run behind 13 points from Bella Ragone for a 36-19 lead at the half. 

Buford got back into the game in the third quarter with a 18-11 spurt, fueled by Lydia Ledford and E’miah Fields, to pull within 47-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

But they could not get within one score as the Lady Hawks were able to hold off the Lady Wolves down the stretch.

Ragone poured in a game-high 30 points, including hitting 8 3-pointers, to lead Mill Creek. Ali Champa added 12 for the Lady Hawks.

Ledford finished with 23 points, 14 in the second half, and Fields had 21, 15 in the second half, to pace Buford. No one else scored more than 4 for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Lightning had their two-game win streak on Monday.

LCA (7-4) was led by Meav Fouts and Elliana Clark with 10 points apiece.

LCA next will travel to West Hall on Tuesday.
