Habersham County officials add days and hours for Recycling Centers accessibility

Habersham County officials have announced that the county’s two recycling centers are open for additional days.

The County's Solid Waste Department says that they will now have the Cornelia/Habersham Recycling Center, at 507 Nicolon Drive, Cornelia, open Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They will also have the Clarkesville Recycling Center, at 4142 Toccoa Highway, open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each center was previously open only three days, weekly.

County Solid Waste Director Johnnie Vickers says that this now provides a combined five additional days for residents to properly dispose of their recycling materials. Vickers adds that the purpose of the extension of days is not just for customer conveience, but to extend the lifetime of Habersham County's Solid Waste facility, which faces maximum capacity issue in the months and year ahead.

Habersham County recycling centers accept the following items:

  • Glass: clear, green, brown
  • Aluminum cans
  • No. 1 or No. 2 plastic bottles/jugs (look on the bottle or jug for the number inside the recycling triangle)
  • Paper products such as newspapers, some types of computer paper, magazines, books, shredded paper
  • Cardboard

Items that are NOT acceptable at their recycling centers include: 

  • Metal and electronics are no longer accepted at the recycling centers. Electronics must be taken to the landfill. There is a $15 minimum charge then prorated at $55 per ton for metal and electronics.

  • Mattresses and box springs are NOT accepted at the recycling centers. Please take those items to the landfill. There is a fee of $10 each.
