Sewer choke in Gainesesville causes spill into unnamed tributary

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter

A sewer choke caused about 3,000 gallons of wastewater to spill into an unnamed tributary to Lake Lanier in Gainesville Wednesday night.

The Gainesville Department of Water Resources received a report  at about 7:21 p.m. of an overflowing sanitary sewer manhole near the 1800-block of Beechwood Boulevard.

The DWR was able to make the necessary corrections to the system and flow was restored by 8 p.m.

No dead or stressed aquatic life were found during an assessment of the area where the spill occurred. All field parameters for water quality were within state standards, according to a release from the city.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division was notified Wednesday afternoon and signs were posted.
