Gwinnett County was recently awarded a $280,000 Livable Centers Initiative grant by the Atlanta Regional Commission for the Jimmy Carter Boulevard Area Master Plan.

The Livable Centers Initiative financially aids planning projects to help communities evolve into more transportable, live-work-play environments for pedestrians and bicyclists.

A press release from Gwinnett County officials this week says that The Jimmy Carter Boulevard Area Master Plan will define a multimodal transportation network and establish future land use recommendations along Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

County officials also noted that it will support future investments in the area by identifying strategies for affordable housing, creative placemaking and commercial revitalization.

Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson says in the press release that she is, “grateful for the opportunity to use these dollars to plan for the future of this vital corridor in a way that enhances quality of life for residents and fuels our local economy.”

Gwinnett Planning and Development Department Director Matthew Dickison added, “We are excited to partner with ARC to develop a master plan that will drive connectivity and a greater sense of place in the Jimmy Carter Boulevard area. Community input will be critical, as the new master plan will provide strategic direction for infrastructure improvements, redevelopment, and affordable housing in the area.”

The planning effort will examine infrastructure improvements such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities and transit. It will also identify open space and placemaking opportunities and recommend code amendments.

Gwinnett government officials are hopeful to start project and community engagement by early 2025.
