The Ronald Reagan Boulevard Extension is now open, adding 3.6 miles on the south end of Ronald Reagan Boulevard between Majors Road and McFarland Parkway.
The project was fully funded by Forsyth County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The new extension will run parallel to SR 400 from the south end of the county to Bald Ridge Marina Road.
“Being able to have this extension that connects both ends of Ronald Reagan Boulevard … definitely alleviates a lot of traffic there,” Forsyth County Director of Communications Russell Brown said.
According to the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank the project cost was $37.2 million.
Forsyth County Government reports that with new traffic signals, a bridge over Big Creek, and wetland mitigation included in the project it was budgeted for $60 million.
The segment is expected to move over 35,000 vehicles per day and will connect Cumming to Alpharetta.
The extension includes a four-lane road with a grass median, a five-foot sidewalk on one side, and a 10-foot multi-use path on the other.
“Thanks to our voters continuing the penny sales tax, we can enhance our transportation infrastructure with projects such as this one,” District Five Commissioner Laura Semanson said.
Brown says Forsyth County voters have approved SPLOST every tear since 1987, giving the county the money necessary to complete these projects.
The county does advise drivers to slow down and travel with care while the final elements are completed in the coming weeks.
