Girls basketball: Bluff, Chestatee take region wins, White Co. loses; defense carries Buford past Carver-Columbus

CLEVELAND Ga.  — In a battle between top 10 teams for the Region 6-3A lead, Pickens County used a fourth quarter rally to beat White County 50-46 Friday night at the White County gym.

The PSR sixth-ranked Lady Warriors (1White Co. wins, 1-4, 3-1 Region 6-3A) took a 38-34 lead into the fourth quarter after holding the top-ranked Dragonettes (12-1, 4-0 Region 6-3A) to just 5 points in the third quarter. But Pickens outscored White County 16-8 in the final period to rally for the win.

Kylie Watkins paced White County with 17 points and Aslyn Burkett and Emma Lightsey each had 11 for the Lady Warriors. But Pickens held the trio to just 9 total points in the second half.

Ellison Skinhauer led Pickens with 17 points. Bella Martin had 13 for the Dragonettes, who took over sole possession of first place in the region.

White County next will travel to GAC on Tuesday.


CHESTATEE 53,
DAWSON COUNTY 46

The Lady War Eagles won their second straight Region 6-3A game with a win over the Lady Tigers at the Lynn Cottrell Complex.

Freshman Ali Jae Bull had 17 points and 7 rebounds to lead the way. The win moved the Lady War Eagles (10-5, 2-2 Region 6-3A) into no worse than a tie for third place with Dawson County the Lady War Eagles (9-6, 2-2 Region 6-3A). 

Payton Cable added 11 points and 8 rebounds and Addison Boyd had 9 points and 4 rebounds for Chestatee. Caroline Bullock had 7 points and 5 steals for the Lady War Eagles. 

Chestatee next will travel to Lumpkin County on Tuesday to continue its Region 6-3A schedule.

Dawson County stays on the road in region play on Tuesday, heading to North Hall.


CHEROKEE BLUFF 55,
MONROE AREA 28 

 The Class 3A fifth-ranked Lady Bears opened Region 8-3A with a dominating win on the road.

Claire Carlson had a huge game for Cherokee Bluff  (12-4, 1-0 Region 8-3A) with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals to pace the offense.

Brooklyn Phillips continued her strong play of late with 14 points and 3 steals while Bristol Kersh added 11 points, 5 assists, and 6 steals for the Lady Bears. Halle Wilson pulled down 8 rebounds and AudreyGraham had 9 rebounds for Bluff.

Cherokee Bluff will play host to West Hall and Monroe Area (6-8, 0-1 Region 8-3A) will play host to East Hall on Tuesday in 8-3A action.


BUFORD 61,
CARVER-COLUMBUS 44

The Lady Wolves held Carver-Columbus to just 16 points in the second and third quarters en route to a non-region win at The Buford Arena on Friday.

The Class 6A 9th-ranked Lady Wolves (9-1) led just 19-14 after the opening period but ran out to a 47-30 lead after the defensive onslaught.

Lydia Ledford paced Buford with 19 points, 13 in the first half as they built a 33-19 lead. Cybele Forbes added 13, 7 in the fourth quarter, for the Lady Wolves.

Triniti Walker led Carver (3-5) with 17 points.

Buford next will take on Gainesville on Saturday at home at 2 p.m.
