Girls basketball: Dawson upsets No. 1 Pickens; GHS, Chestatee, Buford win

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — The Dawson County girls basketball team rallied from a 12-point third-quarter deficit to knock off No. 1-ranked Pickens at the Ford Phillips Center on Tuesday, 53-46. 

Junior Ava Roberson hit seven of her team-high 16 points, including a 5-of-6 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Tigers win. 

The Dragonetts (15-2, 6-1 Region 6-3A) led 27-18, but Dawson County's defense forced Pickens turnovers to cut the lead, 38-33, entering the final eight minutes of play. 

Addison Smith drained a 3-pointer with 4:13 remaining to give the Lady Tigers (11-7, 4-3 Region 6-3A) the lead, 41-40. The Dragonettes took back the lead, 46-45, with less than three minutes, but Dawson County closed the final three minutes on an 8-0 run to seal the win. 

Eva Bishop added 15. Green, along with Maddie Suita, added 8 each. Pickens was led by Ellison Steinhauer’s 19 points and Bella Martin’s 14.   


GAINESVILLE 45,
JOHNS CREEK 34

After a slow first quarter and most of the second, the Gainesville girls basketball team pulled away and held on to beat Johns Creek, 45-34, Tuesday night at the Davis-Hill Gym.

The Red Elephants (10-6, 3-3 Region 7-5A) held on to a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter and only led 13-12 with four minutes left in the opening half, but Jaucelyn Smith, Damaria Colburn and Julia Payne finished the quarter on an 11-2 run to take control, 24-14 at halftime.

Johns Creek (4-14, 1-5 Region 7-5A) closed within eight points on a Landeck basket early in the fourth quarter.

Payne led the Red Elephants with 16 points. Smith had 14, and Damaria Colburn chipped in six. 


BUFORD 62,
MOUNTAIN VIEW 19

The Lady Wolves (14-1, 6-1 Region 8-6A) had three in double figures and nine in the scoring column to blow past Mountain View Tuesday at Buford Arena. 

Jelyea Lapsley led the Lady Wolves with 11 points, while Haley Ryleek and Ansley Keuren scored 10 each in the win. 

Buford led 42-7 at halftime. 


CHESTATEE 73, 
NORTH HALL 41

The Lady War Eagles opened up the game in the third quarter, outscoring North Hall 24-9 en route to the Region 6-3A win at home on Tuesday.

Chestatee (12-5, 4-2 Region 6-3A) led 14-11 after the first and 29-22 at halftime.

Payton Cable led the Lady War Eagles with 21 points and five rebounds. Ali Jae Bull had 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals. Caroline Bull added 19 points and four assists, and Addison Boyd chipped in 6 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Athena Vachtsevanos scored 13 points, and Lauren Hemmer had 12 to lead the Lady Trojans (6-11, 2-5 Region 6-3A).
