GDOT set to widen Dawsonville Highway, completion expected for 2027

By Will Daughtry News Reporter

Improvements are coming for Dawsonville Highway after a $4.2-million construction contract has just been awarded by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

The improvements to State Route 53/Dawsonville Highway and SR 53 Connector will cover 0.9-miles of widening and reconstruction from Ahaluna Drive to Shallowford Road.

The contract was awarded to OHMSHIV Construction, LLC out of Gwinnett County.

The project will connect the existing right-turn auxiliary lanes between Ahaluna and Shallowford, creating a roughly 0.83-mile segment with three through lanes in each direction.

The project will also implement advanced video detection systems for “improved traffic monitoring and efficiency.”

There will also be a modification to the median at Beechwood Boulevard into a restricted crossing U-turn (R-CUT).

The R-CUT median will be between McEver Corners Shopping Center and the unnamed access road adjacent to Jackson EMC to reduce congestion.

The estimated completion date is May 31, 2027.

That is 10 years after preliminary engineering took place in 2017 which cost roughly $1.4-million. A right of way was also implemented in 2021 costing nearly $700,000.

In total, that brings the cost up to roughly $6.3-million upon completion.
