ATLANTA - Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee leads Arizona Sen. John McCain in Georgia's Republican presidential primary race, while Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton are essentially even on the Democratic side, according to a new poll of likely voters published Saturday.
Huckabee received the nod of 31 percent of respondents compared to McCain's 18 percent, while Obama received the nod of 36 percent of respondents compared to Clinton's 33 percent.
On the Republican side, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney tallied 14 percent, followed by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani with 9 percent. On the Democratic side, former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards was third in the poll with 14 percent.
Eighteen percent of respondents on the Republican side said they were undecided, while 16 percent on the Democratic side said they were undecided.
The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
The Mason-Dixon Polling and Research Inc. poll was conducted Jan. 7-10 for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and queried 400 likely Republican primary voters and 400 likely Democratic primary voters.
The Georgia presidential primary is Feb. 5, when more than 20 states will hold their primaries.
