DAWSONVILLE — Dawson County Sheriff's Office investigators believe it was a murder-suicide that claimed the lives of a woman and her teenage son Thursday evening.

Sheriff's Office Capt. Tony Wooten said they believe 53-year-old Nina Hicks shot her 14-year-old son Dustin Hicks and then turned the gun on herself.

He said the both bodies were found in the basement of a home in the Biscayne subdivision.

Deputies were called to the scene by the boy's father, who had gone to the home to visit his son. Wooten said the father called authorities when he couldn't get anyone to answer the door.

"There are some motives...as far as the possibility of the kid's mental and physical condition over several years that may have been a motivating factor," said Wooten.

He said they also discovered other evidence in the home that leads investigators to believe the incident was a murder-suicide.

Biscayne subdivision is located off Harmony Church Road in Dawson County.
