Police: Woman dies after being run over following purse snatching

COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) Authorities are searching for a suspect who they say ran over and killed a woman after stealing her purse.

Local news outlets report the incident happened Monday around 7:45 p.m. at a Wal-Mart in Covington.

Covington Police Department spokesman Capt. Craig Treadwell says officers arrived at the scene to find the woman, who was lying in the parking lot after being struck by a vehicle multiple times.

Treadwell says the suspect had taken the unidentified woman's purse, jumped in a vehicle and ran over her more than once as the suspect escaped.

Police say the suspect fled in a silver or gray vehicle. Police say the woman was transported to a hospital, where she died.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police.
