DACULA — Two women were killed in a crash on Ga. Highway 316 at Winder Highway Tuesday afternoon.
Gwinnett County police said officers were called to the scene around 3 p.m. and found an overturned Jeep Grand Cherokee with two unresponsive occupants inside. A tractor trailer, which had jack-knifed, also was at the scene. The driver of the rig was uninjuured.
In their report, investigators said the driver of the tractor-trailer, Alfred Harris, 48, of Arkansas was traveling eastbound on 316 toward Athens in the slow lane. The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lula Rome, 85, of Snellville, was originally traveling westbound on 316 toward Lawrenceville in the fast lane. Investigators said Rome attempted to make a left turn from the fast lane of 316 onto Winder Highway and turned into the path of the tractor trailer.
While being treated at the hospital, Rome died as a result of her injuries, according to officers. The passenger in the Jeep was identified as Deirdre Hudson, 56, of Snellville; Hudson died at the scene of the crash.
