Woman sent to prison for setting fire to Athens homeless camp

By The Associated Press
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) A woman who pleaded guilty to setting fire to a homeless camp in Athens has been sentenced to prison.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that 45-year-old Carole Rayeanne Childers-Queen received a 20-year sentence for the 2013 fire under an Athens bridge and an earlier arson blaze at a home in east Athens.

The sentenced handed down by Clarke County Superior Court Judge Lawton Stephens calls for Childers-Queen to spend seven years in prison and rest on probation.

Authorities say the fire under the bridge displaced the people living in the camp and also caused a gas leak that had the potential for causing an explosion.

Authorities said Childers-Queen set the fire on Jan. 29, 2013, to retaliate against a man with whom she had argued.
