DALLAS, Ga. (AP) A car driven by an elderly woman who apparently lost control while trying to park jumped a curb and struck five people Friday, killing one, police said.
The car driven by an 81-year-old Cobb County woman wound up on a sidewalk, Sheriff's Cpl. Ashley Henson said.
The vehicle struck three adults and two infants who were outside the Paulding County Courthouse, Henson said. One woman was killed and the mother of the children had leg injuries. A third adult was taken to a hospital for evaluation. The babies were not hurt, Henson said.
Hotdog vendor Ronald Dborak was inside the building when the crash happened and saw people gathered on the sidewalk as emergency responders arrived.
The driver remained in the car during the commotion, Dborak told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"She was crying,'' he said. "She must've hit the accelerator pedal instead of the brake and panicked, I guess.''
The driver, identified as Marlene Wilbur of Marietta wasn't seriously injured, but she was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Wilbur was later charged with second degree vehicular homicide; she was released from jail on a signature bond, according to the AJC.
