JESUP, Ga. (AP) Wayne County Police say two young children have drowned in a pond in southeast Georgia.
WTOC-TV reports the children, a 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, were playing with their 6-year-old sister on Wednesday when the oldest sister told their grandmother the two children were lost.
The girl told her grandmother the children were in a pond behind the home. The grandmother, who is wheelchair bound, called Emergency 911 and neighbors for help.
Firefighters recovered the bodies of the children within minutes of arriving at the pond. Wayne County Detective Brandon Rozier said the edge of the pond, which is shallow, opens to a deep drop.
The children were taken to Wayne County Memorial Hospital in Jesup, where they were pronounced dead.
