Cleveland residents want more green space, historic preservation efforts

By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio

CLEVELAND — The first of two public comment meetings on the White County Comprehensive Plan was held in Cleveland Monday night at the City Hall Annex.

The last time the comprehensive plan was updated was in 2009, and officials are working with the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission (GMRC) in developing the plan. Adam Hazell, Planning Director with GMRC, said public input is vital to the process.

"The more information we get from people, the more clear their direction...and it helps their elected officials on how to make Cleveland better," said Hazell.

Citizens, for the most part, told officials they aren't concerned about seeing more growth in White County.

"The prevailing theme that we heard was that the people are not as concerned about growing more - they just want to see what they have already here in town better," said Hazell.

Among the suggestions: creation of a pedestrian-friendly area downtown, more sidewalks, beautification of the city, environmentally green, historic preservation  and keeping a small town feel for Cleveland.

Another public comment meeting will be held at Helen City Hall Tuesday, June 16 at 6 p.m.   Those unable to attend may obtain survey forms and more information at either city hall.
