Atlanta's famed Cyclorama is closing at the end of this month to prepare for its move to the Atlanta History Center.
As part of its "A visit with..." interview series, Georgia News Network talked with Camille Russell Love, executive director of Atlanta’s Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs about the move. You can listen to the interview above.
The painting is actually titled “The Battle of Atlanta." Weighing in at nine tons and measuring 42 feet tall and 365 feet wide, the painting is one of the largest in the world.
Officials say its condition has deteriorated considerably in its current location. Under the plan, the Atlanta History Center would restore the painting and build a new building to house it.
The Cyclorama and Civil War Museum has been located in Grant Park, near the entrance to Zoo Atlanta, for decades. The painting inside the museum has been in Grant Park since 1893. The Diorama was added years later in 1936. It has been housed in its current building since 1921. The painting was restored about 35 years ago, but is again showing its age.
