WINDER — Three adults were displaced by a late-night house fire Monday, according to officials with the Barrow County Fire Department.

In a press statement, Fire Department Lt. Scott Dakin said the fire was reported just after 10 p.m. Monday at a house in the 500 block of Cherokee Road in the Winder area.

"Communication officers dispatched firefighters to the address and advised residents to evacuate the home," said Dakin. "Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire showing in the garage and spreading up the exterior wall into the attic of the home."

Dakin said firefighters did an aggressive attack on the fire and brought it under control in about 20 minutes. The home suffered extensive damage.

The Fire Investigation Team was dispatched to the scene to conduct an origin and cause investigation. Investigators determined that the fire started as a result of a mechanical issue in a vehicle that was parked in the garage.

Dakin said fire crews were rotated often, due to the summer temperatures, which affects abilities of crews to conduct firefighting methods for long periods of time. No firefighters were injured; the three occupants of the house escaped without injury.
