Storm downs trees, blows over gas pump in Cleveland

By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio

CLEVELAND - A line of afternoon thunderstorms roared through northeast Georgia Monday, leaving numerous trees and tree limbs down in Cleveland and other areas.

The storm hit around 5 p.m. and at the peak of the storm 56-mph wind was recorded at the White County Emergency Operations Center.

There was no major damage reported, even though Cleveland Fire Chief Ricky Pruitt said two homes were hit by trees.

In addition, Pruitt reported a gas pump at the Chevron convenience store on Helen Highway was blown over.

"The links on the fuel lines coming out of the ground from the pump did exactly as they were supposed to," Pruitt said. "The check valve shut the gas off and the emergency power shut itself down.”

Cleveland Fire Department was assisted by White County firefighters. Additionally, Cleveland Public Works crews worked to clean up the down trees.
