A Jackson County man working as a mail sorter at the Commerce Post Office has been indicted for stealing dozens of pieces of mail while on the job.
The Athens Banner Herald reported Brian Scott Neely, 36, of Nicholson was stealing mail and hiding it in the ceiling of the post office. He would return later and take cash and gift cards from the pilfered mail, according to Commerce police. They said they did not believe Neely was trying to steal anyone's identity.
Investigators told the newspaper they used surveillance footage to catch Neely in the act.
Neely had worked at the post office for about a month, according to the newspaper report.
A Jackson County grand jury last week indicted Neely on 137 counts, including secreting property to defraud another, misdemeanor theft and destruction of mail.
