Officials are still searching for an unidentified man who went missing in Lake Lanier early this weekend.
Mark McKinnon with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said in an email Sunday evening that crews were still searching the lake using side scan sonar but had not yet located the man.
In an earlier update, McKinnon said that state authorities, along with units from both Forsyth County and Hall County fire departments, were called to the scene near Aqualand Marina just before 8 p.m. Friday. Witnesses told authorities they saw the victim - described as a 29-year-old black male - go under in the middle of the lake.
Local divers remained on the scene until about 9:30, but suspended their search due to safety concerns for emergency personnel, according to James Hundley with the Forsyth County Fire Department. McKinnon noted that the part of the lake where the victim disappeared is a treacherous area.
"The depth is around 125 feet in that area with heavy timber on the bottom," McKinnon said.
Rangers stayed on the scene until 1:30 a.m. Saturday using side-scan sonar to search for the victim and searched throughout the day Sunday. The victim's name has still not been released.
Just last weekend, a Florida man drowned in Lake Lanier near Three Sisters Islands. Authorities have not yet found the body of 23-year-old Kevin Theodore Husum.
