Lake Lanier Association sets sights on another abandoned houseboat

By B.J. Williams

The Lake Lanier Association is wasting no time in removing another abandoned houseboat from the waters of Lake Lanier - the so-called Houseboat 44 will be coming out of the lake this Friday.

LLA Executive Director Joanna Cloud made the announcement Tuesday morning in a press statement.

"This vessel has been sitting on the shoreline close to lake marker 44 since the first of the year," Cloud said. "While the vessel is beached on the shoreline right now, since our lake is down five feet below full pool, it does not have floating integrity and is at risk for sinking when lake levels are higher."

Cloud said the abandoned houseboat is beached in a small cove that is part of Lanier Point Park. Because it is mostly on shore, it has been vandalized and painted with graffiti.

The Lake Lanier Association, Department of Natural Resources and Hall County are coordinating efforts and financial resources to get the vessel removed from the lake.

Just last month, on July 21, the three entities successfully removed a sunken houseboat in the Sunrise Cove Marina area.

Hall County commissioners voted in June to commit $15,000 to the effort to remove derelict houseboats and docks from Lake Lanier during the current fiscal year.
