Proposed rehab facility for sex trafficking victims will have its fate determined Thursday

The controversial rehab facility proposed by Straight Street Revolution Ministries for sex trafficking victims will receive a final verdict from the Hall County Board of Commissioners on Thursday.

The application to rezone 50-acres of undeveloped property in the southern part of Hall County was recommended for denial by the Hall County Planning Commission at their meeting on Nov. 21, despite being recommended for approval with conditions by the county planning staff. Now it is up to the board of commissioners to have the final say.

The controversy emerges due to the massive opposition from potential future neighbors on Weaver Road that fear for their safety should the rehab facility be approved. These feeling come despite Straight Street’s best efforts to quell what they feel are unsubstantiated fears.

Over 100 neighbors have signed a petition in opposition of the rezoning request.

Straight Street Ministries asked to table the request back in December until this Thursday. In that time, they have agreed to reduce the maximum number of houses on the property from 17 to 7 and to self-impose a 100 ft setback along Weaver Road and a 200 ft setback everywhere else on the property, the previous setback was set at 25 ft, in an effort to appease the concerns of neighbors.

The Hall County Board of Commissioners will meet Thursday, January 26 at 6 p.m. at the Hall County Government Center on Brown's Bridge Road.
