UPDATE: Arson now suspected in fire at Gainesville school building

By B.J. Williams
It now appears that a fire at a modular building on the Gainesville High School campus was a case of arson.

Dr. Jeremy Williams, the Superintendent of the Gainesville City School System, said Friday morning after school system officials worked with the Gainesville Fire Department and the Gainesville Police Department all day Thursday, they determined the fire was probably set on purpose.

Williams said the modular unit is located behind the Ninth Grade Center and was part of the former Lanier Tech set up at the school, so the building was not in use.

The fire was discovered in the early morning hours on Thursday, Feb. 21. There was no damage to other structures in the area.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
