A judge is set to hear arguments this week on recall petitions that have been filed against Hoschton Mayor Teresa Kenerly and City Councilman Jim Cleveland.
Community activists began gathering signatures on recall petitions for the two earlier this summer following controversial actions and statements involving the elected officials.
Jackson County Elections Director Jennifer Logan confirmed in a Monday morning email that an application for a recall petition had been filed with her office, and she confirmed a hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 2 in Jackson County Superior Court.
The controversy with the elected officials surfaced in May when an article appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution claiming that Kenerly had removed an application for the city administrator's job when she discovered the applicant was black. Kenerly is accused of saying "she didn't think Hoschton was ready for that." Cleveland defended the mayor in an interview with the newspaper, making comments opposing interracial marriage.
