The opening of the Exit 14 overpass bridge over Interstate 985 has been postponed once again, and again, the weather gets the blame.
The Georgia Department of Transportation had planned to open the bridge at some point on Monday, Jan. 27, but the agency announced in a press release that rain had forced another delay. Striping still needs to be done on the bridge, and that's an activity that cannot be done in wet weather.
Meanwhile, the State Route 11/US 129 Longstreet Bridge located over the Chattahoochee River is still set to open Tuesday, Jan. According to GDOT press information, crews will be in the lanes at 9 a.m. removing barricades. Traffic should be able to use the new bridge by afternoon drive.
The removal of the old Longstreet Bridge will begin within a week of the opening of the new one. Drivers will notice that a five-day detour will be in place for Thompson Mill Road; drivers wishing to turn on Thompson Mill Road will be detoured by way of Parker Road while grading and final tie-ins are finished.
