The City of Cleveland is proposing increased fees in several areas, including the cost of building permits.
During a teleconference meeting of the city council Monday night, City Administrator Tom O’Bryant told the council that building permit fees have not been updated since 2004 and a lot of things have changed since then, including the number of inspections the city is required to conduct.
"You’re looking at an $80 to $90 increase on a 1,500-square-foot home that would be built in the city," O’Bryant said.
The proposed increase will help the department be more self-sustaining and less likely to be subsidized by other city revenue sources, O’Bryant said.
The council voted to have the first consideration on the issue with a second consideration and possible adoption at a future meeting.
The council also approved the first consideration of water and sewer rates and talked about the required upgrades at the city wastewater treatment plant.
Additionally, the council had the first consideration of the update of garbage pickup fees to meet the increased cost faced by the city.
