Someone makes bogus charges on Collins for Senate credit card

By AccessWDUN Staff
An investigation is underway after someone managed to steal a credit card number from the Doug Collins for Senate campaign.

Cpl. Jessica Van with the Gainesville Police Department said someone with the campaign received notification of the irregular charges and contacted police Thursday. Van said the fraudulent charges were made somewhere in the United Kingdom.

"About $2,000 worth did go through, but now, there could possibly be more charges that maybe got denied," Van said, noting that the investigation into the theft is ongoing.

Van said investigators haven't made the link yet on how the account was hacked, and she doesn't know what was purchased.

"It's possible the actual card was used somewhere here for official use and at that point the account number somehow made its way across seas," Van said.

Van said credit card theft can happen to anyone.

"Always keep track on what's going on with your credit card, your debit card, your bank account in general...so that if something should pop up, you catch it before it's too late," Van said.
