Sign-ups are now available for a dragon boat race on Sept. 11 at Lake Lanier which aims to honor the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as fallen public safety heroes.
Jim O'Dell, executive director of the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club said they still wanted to hold a smaller-scale event after the annual Atlanta Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival was canceled this year due to COVID-19 concerns.
"It seemed very fitting to hold a smaller event using smaller boats for the Blaine Dixon Fallen Heroes Fund," O'Dell said. "It was decided very quickly that we can honor those that lost their lives on that day 20 years ago, as well as honoring, remembering and respecting those in public service."
Money raised through the entry fees for teams that sign up to participate will go toward the fund, which aims to support the families of any first responder who loses their life while serving in Hall County.
O'Dell said dragon boat racing is something anyone can do, no matter the experience level. For this race, in particular, each boat will contain 10 paddlers, as well as a drummer.
"Dragon boat racing is one of those things that just about everybody can do," O'Dell said. "From ages 11 all the way up to 70 plus. It's an accessible sport ... it's all about teamwork."
