A 17-year-old from Barrow County has died after contracting COVID-19.
The teen's death was listed on the Georgia Department of Public Health COVID-19 Daily Status Report on Thursday, Sept. 2, although the Barrow County coroner confirmed the death of Ni'zay Elmore Vance on Aug. 5 at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.
According to information on a GoFundMe page for the teen's family, Ni'Zay was born with physical and developmental disabilities and was not expected to live beyond his toddler years.
"From day one Ni'Zay showed everyone he was strong, resilient, and courageous," the family wrote on the page. "Ni'Zay beat all odds of doctors telling us - the family - he wouldn't live past two years old, but he lived to see age 17."
The post acknowledged the teen's battle with the virus.
"Due to COVID, Ni'Zay's life was turned upside down," the post said.
Information on the page indicated Ni'Zay graduated from high school and received a diploma. A spokesperson for the Barrow County School System said the teen was not enrolled in the district.
While the teen's funeral service was held on Aug. 20 in Buford, the family is still seeking funds to cover the cost of the funeral.
