Gainesville City Parks and Recreation will host its first-ever Día de los Muertos celebration Sunday at the Engine 209 Park Midland Greenway.

Recreation Program Manager Britteny Hammonds said the department has partnered with local tattoo shop Arte to bring the event to Gainesville from 4 to 7 p.m.

“We are going to have some kid's crafts and coloring sheets and we are also going to be having a live arts market," she said. "We're going to have just some different Latin artists coming to showcase their art.”

Hammond said attendees can also look forward to vendors, a DJ, food from local restaurant La Tapatia, and an ofrenda, which acts as an offering table for families to leave items in memory of lost loved ones.

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican Holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2 to celebrate and remember the lives of loved ones who have passed on.

Sunday’s event will be free and open to the public.
