Registration open for Brenau creative writing camp

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Brenau University in Gainesville has opened registration for a new writing camp being held this summer.

The camp is being hosted by the university's Department of Humanities and will be open for children ages 11 to 15 during the first week of June. A release from the university said the camp will use popular tabletop role playing games to develop creative writing skills.

Brenau's Humanities Department Chair Megan Clark, Ph.D., said the games have become increasingly popular in recent years and present prime opportunities to teach creative writing.

"Creating characters, role playing, figuring out cool ways to solving a problem, it's all those things," Clark said. "We figured, as opposed to just offering a creative writing camp, this would have sort of more direction, generate some more interest, and be a little more dynamic."

Clark is also a professor of English at the university and its interim Writing Center director. She said the camp will offer both individual and group exercises and use math for elements such as determining attack rolls and calculating damage in the games.

Wendy Clark, office manager for the Humanities Department, said some supplies will be provided to children who attend the camp.

"Campers will get a swag bag including a character journal, colored pencils, stickers to decorate," Wendy Clark said. "They get paint pens to decorate their bags, and they will get individual dice bags."

The camp will run from June 2 through June 6, lasting from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day in Brenau's Trustee Library. Lunch and snacks will be provided to campers.

Early bird registration is open through Tuesday at a discounted price of $225. After that date, registration will remain open at the regular price of $250.
