Habitat for Humanity of Hall, NGHS kick off new home build in Gainesville

Habitat for Humanity of Hall County was joined by Northeast Georgia Health System executives Thursday to begin work on what will soon be home number 24 of the Copper Glen neighborhood in Gainesville.

The plan was to officially break ground at lot 11 Thursday; however, rain in the forecast led the organization to “break ground” off site and at the Habitat ReStore off Murphy Boulevard in Gainesville, according to Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator Holly Johnson.

“We had groups that were doing construction kind of tasks like building sawhorses, which we have to have out there on the build site when we actually do have shovels in hand and break ground on this new home,” Johnson said.

NGHS executives and Habitat volunteers also helped with creative projects that will go to future homeowners and toward an upcoming fundraiser that will be held June 30 at the new Bourbon Brothers restaurant downtown Gainesville, she said. Volunteers painted artwork and made birdhouses.

“I think they [NGHS executives] had a fun and fulfilling experience, which is what we try to make each build day for everyone that joins us,” Johnson said.

Habitat will break ground on lot 11 with shovels in dirt Saturday, May 20, alongside volunteers from Free Chapel.

“We have build days three days a week and if anyone is interested in volunteering, whether it’s a group day for a corporation or an organization, or individually, we’d love to have them,” Johnson said.

Lot 11 at Copper Glen will be house number 70 for Habitat for Humanity of Hall County.
