3 Gwinnett County high school's become Fall Esports State Champions

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter
Three Gwinnett County public high schools became the first-ever Fall Esports State Champions during a competition at the University of West Georgia Coliseum.

Seckinger High School, Peachtree Ridge High School, and Brookwood High School each won in their respective games.

Seckinger High overpowered Landmark Christian High School, 3-1, to secure the Smash Bros. Ultimate (A-4A) Championship. Smash Bros. Ultimate is a “fighting” game in which the object is to knock out your opponent by attacking them.

Peachtree Ridge High, competing in the League of Legends, outmatched Brookwood High 2-0 to secure the championship. League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena game in which two teams of five players battle to destroy the opposing team’s base.

Brookwood High School earned the Smash Bros. Ultimate (5A-7A) Championship by beating Valdosta High School 3-1. Brookwood High finished the season as the only undefeated team in the state while securing its third state title in a row.

Jason Holcombe, GCPS Director of Athletics, expressed his pride in the district’s success in a press release.

“Esports is the youngest athletic program in GCPS, and it has taken off by storm,” Holcombe said. “This is evident by the student engagement and success the district’s programs have had in just three short years. Esports offers GCPS students another opportunity to be more engaged with their school. This is especially true for students more interested in the technology and tactics required to be a successful Esports team.”
