Caller ID scam affecting Cornelia's Police Department

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

The City of Cornelia's Police Department has a fraud alert that involves, of all things, Cornelia Police Department's identity.

Officials say scammers are calling local residents, using a line that appears on caller ID with the correct Cornelia Police Department number, as the fraudulent caller poses as a member of the department, using current employee names, and seeking personal information over the phone to "complete a report".

The problem?  Cornelia Police NEVER calls people to ask for those details over the phone, so do not give out personal details such as social security numbers, ID numbers or financial account details, and contact the REAL police department officials.

If you have further questions or concerns, Cornelia Police Department invites you to stop by their station in person, or call them at 706-778-4314, and ask to speak with Lieutenant Ryan Hunt.  You can read more about the fraud alert on the Cornelia Police Department's official Facebook page, here.
