New phone scam advisory has appeared in Jackson County

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter
Another phone scam approach is being used against some northeast Georgia residents this week.  The most recent attempt is affecting some residents in Jackson County.

Sheriff Janis Mangum's office has recently posted on social media that they have been contacted eariler this week about a, "Rollover Absentee Ballot" scam. Sheriff Mangum's post indicates that a person received a text message Wednesday, July 10 at around 6:30 p.m., stating that they were not on the voter list and had to register within 2 minutes or they would not be allowed to vote.

The unidentified person felt like something was suspicious and they didn't follow the links to register as they were being told to do.  Sheriff Mangum says it's just another example of a scam that is being used by criminals to obtain personal information for the purposes of theft and identity fraud.

Jackson County officials and many law enforcement agencies are reminding residents, DO NOT follow any text messages of this nature.  Sheriff Mangum says her department has received several calls this week alone, regarding different phone and text scams of a wide variety.  She says the following list is a short one that are targets from thieves to commit wire fraud and identity thefts of a diffferent variety:
  • Voting scam
  • IRS scam
  • Jury summons scam
  • Computer virus scam
  • Grandparent scam
  • Romance scam
  • Jail bonding scam
  • Funeral Home scam
  • Power company scam
For tips on how to handle such phone calls and texts, and how to prevent further scams, a link to Jackson County Sheriff's Office's Facebook post can be found, here.  If you are directy contacted by a scam artist,  immediately report the incident to your local law enforcement agency's non-emergency correspondence with the details.
