Authorities in Barrow County are warning the public about scams targeted at family members of jail inmates.
A social media post Tuesday by the Barrow County Sheriff's Office said the scammers are posing as deputies and using tactics similar to recently reported jail bond scams.
"The scammer will contact the arrestee's family...then request either $500.00 or $750.00 for the release of the arrestee with an ankle monitor," the post said. "The ankle monitor scam also involves payment through electronic means."
The sheriff's office reminded residents that it will not contact anyone in regards to bonding out a family member.
"Please do not pay any money to these con-artists and fall victim to these scams," sheriff's office officials said. "Always meet with someone in person at their office or our Detention Center to bond your loved one out."
