ATLANTA (AP) Authorities say Georgia schools are not required to discard Blue Bell ice cream products, but some school systems have announced that they are doing so.
Matt Cardoza, a spokesman for the Georgia Department of Education, said Tuesday that school districts are not required to pull the products.
Neither Hall County nor Gainesville City schools sell or serve Blue Bell products, according to officials from bothe school systems.
Georgia's second-largest school system, the Cobb County School District in suburban Atlanta, announced that it removed all Blue Bell ice cream and other frozen products from its schools on Tuesday after the company announced a voluntary recall.
Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries this week issued a voluntary recall for all of its products on the market after some samples tested positive for listeria, a potentially deadly bacteria.
The Covington News reports that Newton County schools destroyed blue Bell ice cream products in schools there.
