Pair from Oklahoma accused in Oakwood scam

By B.J. Williams

Two suspects from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma are accused of ripping off a Hall County woman to the tune of nearly $25,000.

Lt. Todd Templeton with the Oakwood Police Department said law enforcement received a tip from Adult Protective Services on June 3, 2019 about an older woman who was likely the victim of online fraud.

"Upon receiving the tip from APS, Oakwood officers opened an investigation and contacted the victim," Templeton said in an email statement. "The investigation revealed the victim had been befriended by a subject she met online. At that time, the victim felt she was involved in a relationship with the person."

Templeton said investigators determined the identity that was being used by the other party had been fabricated.

He said the woman, whose name was not released, sent cashier's checks and other purchases to addresses the suspects provided.

Templeton estimated the checks and the other merchandise amounted to a loss of some $25,000.

"During the investigation, Oakwood officers were able to track some of the banking activity and found Katrina Mitchell, 24, and another subject, Prince Nortey, 27, both from Oklahoma City, OK, were receiving some of the money and goods sent by the victim," Templton said.

He said further investigation gave investigators enough evidence to obtain warrants for financial exploitation of an elderly person for both Mitchell and Nortey.

Mitchell recently was arrested in Oklahoma and has since been extradited back to Hall County, according to Templeton. Authorities are still searching for Nortey.
